According to a report on the website of the Japan Broadcasting Association (NHK), the Japanese government intends to add the ornamental fish "koi" to the list of "key export commodities" and increase support for farmers and others.

According to the report, the Japanese government has put together a new strategic plan to increase exports of agricultural, forestry and fishery products and foodstuffs to 2 trillion yen by 2025, ahead of schedule. This includes adding koi, which is popular and highly valued overseas, to the list of "priority export commodities" and strengthening support for farmers and production areas. The Japanese government has previously listed some 30 commodities, including beef, rice and fruit, as "priority export commodities" in order to promote exports in a focused manner.

In order to prevent the loss of variety patents for agricultural products overseas, the government is also reportedly planning to set up an agency to monitor registration and infringement, among other functions. In addition, the food labelling system will be adapted to international standards.

Reports indicate that in 2022, exports of agricultural, forestry and fishery products and foodstuffs had already exceeded 1 trillion yen as of October and are continuing to increase. At this rate, it will break the record high set in 2021. Against this backdrop, the Japanese government is considering finalising a new strategic plan in the near future to meet the original target ahead of schedule.
