According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) on the 4th, in 2023, the civil aviation industry as a whole completed a total of 118.83 billion tons of transport turnover, 620 million passengers transported, and 7.354 million tons of cargo and mail transported, representing year-on-year growth of 98.3%, 146.1%, and 21%, respectively, and recovered to 91.9%, 93.9%, and 97.6% in 2019.

The 2024 National Civil Aviation Work Conference held in Beijing on the 4th pointed out that in 2024 civil aviation will strengthen international cooperation and promote the accelerated recovery of the international market. Civil aviation will implement the results of the meeting between the Chinese and U.S. heads of state and promote the substantial increase in direct flights between China and the U.S.; actively expand air traffic rights arrangements with the "Belt and Road" countries, and deepen project cooperation with Central Asia, the Middle East, Africa and other regions; enhance the efficiency of the use of existing three and four air traffic rights resources, and support airlines to make good use of the fifth air traffic rights outside the country in accordance with the needs of the expansion of the route network. It will also promote the optimization of visa and entry-exit policies, improve the level of customs clearance facilitation, and enhance the efficiency of international flight entry and exit.

The rapid recovery of China's civil aviation industry also reflects the global recovery trend. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) recently predicted that 4.7 billion people will travel in 2024, a record high, and IATA also predicted that the cargo volume will be 58 million tons and 61 million tons in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

Zhang Ying, head of the CADAS Shanghai team at Flymate Technology, said in an interview with the Global Times that the development of all civil aviation has returned to natural growth, and that China's civil aviation is expected to enter a new round of development cycle. In the coming period, the international market recovery will become the focus, and the recovery of the Asia-Pacific region, the "Belt and Road" countries and other markets may be the main force for the recovery of international flights.

Although the global aviation industry is gradually recovering from the epidemic, but the Asia-Pacific region is still facing challenges. Hong Kong's South China Morning Post recently said that factors hindering the industry's recovery include slow reopening of borders, flight disruptions, delays in aircraft deliveries, shortages of spare parts for the existing fleet, and a severe shortage of professional aviation labor. During the epidemic, there was a significant loss of personnel, including pilots, ground crew and flight attendants. And it can take 3-4 years to train new pilots. Forecasts from aviation management consulting firm Oliver Wyatt Consulting say that demand for pilots will outstrip supply in most regions between 2022 and 2024, posing a challenge for further growth in the aviation industry.
